Impact of social media and the online environment on young people
Adopted
395 in favour · 136 against · 80 abstained. 611 of 720 members voted; 109 did not.
What it asks for, in the Parliament's words
- Supports the introduction for online platforms of a ‘youth mode’, disabling targeted advertising and limiting addictive design features for minors
- Regrets the fact that several mechanisms used by online platforms to control access to their services, such as self-declaration, are easily bypassed, and that minors still have widespread access to age-inappropriate content
- Stresses that social media can cause addiction and thus serious mental health harms, particularly for minors, with links to anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and body image issues
